CREST participated in the 2024 Pre-College Engineering Day by Latin American Engineering Student Association Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineerings on April 5, 2024 at the City College of New York, a 10 year long tradition. Mr. César Ortiz, CREST Office Manager, Dr. Liubov Kreminska, Administrative Director of the Earth System and Environmental Engineering (ESE) Degree Program at CCNY, and Ms. Srishti Tyagi, CREST Communication Manager and CUNY HIRES Coordinator represented the institute at the event.

The event provided a platform to Latinx and other minority high school students to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STE) fields and college career opportunities. Through well organized lab tours, informative workshops, opportunity fair, and student competition on assembling a battery model car, the event entailed a fun-filled and productive day of engagement for the high schoolers as they prepare to apply for colleges.

The workshops helped participants understand important topics such as the importance of diversity and inclusion in professional and academic spaces and that of online presence such as LinkedIn branding and email etiquette, the reality of Code switching in STEM, etc while the lab tours gave them insights into CCNY facilities where real-time work that is done by aspiring engineers and researchers to support their research.

CREST facilitated the lab tours for the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), facilitated by Dr. Yonghua Wu, Research Scientist, CCNY and Ocean and Coastal Optical Remote Sensing (ORS) Lab, facilitated by Mateusz Malinowski, Ph.D. Student at CCNY at the Grove School of Engineering.

Further, during the opportunity fair, CREST Team interacted with students to help them learn about the various opportunities available within the City College, CREST, and Earth Systems Environmental Engineering (ESE) degree program. The high schoolers also learnt about the CUNY High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Engineering and Sciences (HIRES)- an innovative program that provides advanced STEM research and college-readiness opportunities to NYC high school students.

Students were engaged and curious to learn about the opportunities at CREST!
